A three year action research project implemented by IIRR in collaboration with DepEd Cavite province, Department of Agriculture and Food and Nutrition Research Institute funded by IDRC from 2012-2015 developed and tested an Integrated Nutrition Model of gardening using bio intensive gardening approach, supplementary feeding using iron-fortified rice and indigenous vegetables and nutrition education for children and parents.
This study showed that supplementary feeding of malnourished school children using iron-fortified rice and indigenous vegetables from school gardens significantly improved their nutritional status.
With this promising result, DepEd Damariñas shall be joining IIRR in their mission of improving the nutritional status among public school learners. With this commitment, all PSDS and public elementary school principals are hereby enjoined to provide full support to the program.
It is highly recommended that the school heads create a school-based technical working group (TWG) that will initiate, implement, and strengthen the said program.
Attached is a template entitled Action Plan on Integrated School Nutrition Model. The content of the action plan shall be the basis for monitoring and evaluation of the program. Kindly submit this to the Division Office on or before June 17, 2016, addressed to:
